Truly, much salt was sweat in our fiery glassworks for the creation of this fine glass. And well worth it.
At NovaScotian Crystal, we have a practice of designing our barware and stemware to enhance the pleasure of specific beverages. With a single malt glass and a host of wine glasses under out belt, we thought it was high time we tackled rum.
As is our custom, we cast our nets for rum experts. The connoisseurs, the authorities, and the just plain drinkers. Being here in Canada’s Maritimes, we didn’t have to cast very far. Rum has had a long run as the spirit of choice in Nova Scotia. It flows through our seafaring culture, back to our historic connection to the Caribbean. (Best not to get into details about our shady rum-running days.)
We gathered together five well-established rum-drinking sailors, including an Olympian. As a sailor, that is. He was never an Olympic rum-drinker. Should the sport ever be included in that great competition, we’d love to know. We can supply excellent equipment.
For the happy occasion, we created five distinctly shaped glasses. We also had on hand three excellent rums, plenty of ice, and a choice of mixers. The first round of testing, however, was done with the pure and unsullied elixir, this being the best way to judge the shape of the glass.
The glasses were judged on their beauty, their handling experience, and the effect of the shape in delivering the rum to its final destination. Equipped with the experts’ critiques, we combined the best features into our new Seafarer’s Rum Glass.
It has a bold look and a satisfying heft. Around its centre, our craftsmen have cut an elegant swath of cuts referencing the choppy Atlantic — a tribute to the ocean waves the rum has travelled. Some have claimed they feel a sense of calm just from holding the glass in their hand. The effect, we think, of the compass rose cut smartly into the bottom. It’s the comfort a mariner takes in having this navigational tool in hand.
Not the least of its qualities is the shapes ability to enhance the aromatic and flavour properties of the rum.
To our knowledge, this is the world’s first and finest vessel designed specifically for rum. To that, we raise our glass and say, yo ho ho. (Really. We said that.) To Order Online, Click Here .
