We use your magnificent crystal just about every evening. We love it!
Recently, I have noticed that two (of six) barrel tumblers that we use regularly for bourbon have developed a brownish cast to to the glass. (This isn't readily discernible until they are put next to the other four.) I am sure this is from the bourbon, but my question is: Do you have any suggestions or secrets for a full cleaning?
Glad to hear you're enjoying the crystal and using it regularly.
We recommend two methods for a thorough cleaning: 1. Denture cleaning tablets ? drop one in, wait a few hours and rinse 2. Rice ? drop some rice into a glass with warm, mild soapy water and stir with the end of a wooden spoon. The rice will act as a mild abrasive on the interior walls of the glass.
Please let us know if neither of these methods seem to help!
I love my NS crystal but I cannot clean/remove a milky scum which I believe is caused by soy milk. I have tried the above suggestions plus vinegar, dish washer detergent, baking soda, etc. Nothing is working. Can you help?
Thank you for your inquiry Diane, this is an issue we do hear about from time-to-time.
Crystal, because it is softer than regular glass, is porous. This means that if it is cleaned on a regular basis using anything except a mild detergent, those pores can retain elements of harsh detergents or other substances. These elements can then pit or stain the crystal, and can not be "cleaned off". In fact, the only way to remove this is acid polishing.
